one’s roots

Reinterpreting traditions, and bringing together diverse influences, Aurus offers a refined, sophisticated vocabulary of fine jewelry that is rooted in craft and shaped by innovation. Our jewelry is quietly opulent and deeply meaningful, crafted through a modern lens on old forgotten techniques. Inspired by the richness and lineage of Indian jewelry, and its art of jewelry-making, each design comes infused with meaning and intentional creativity.

The story
The origin

Aurus was co-founded by the Ahmedabad-based husband-wife duo, Kunal and Puja Shah. A classic left-brain-right-brain combination, Kunal drives the business, while Puja is at the heart of everything design and creative.

Puja’s journey with art and design started in New York, where she was formally trained in jewelry design at the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her exposure to India’s incredible heritage in crafts, materials, and techniques during her time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art further shaped her design sensibility, which is a fusion of tradition and innovation, inspired by the beauty and complexity of Indian art and culture and the global crossroads it has always existed in.

The design
The Idea of India

India buys jewelry in diverse and time-honored ways. Families and communities cherish and pass on pieces through generations in a restrained, nuanced manner. This layered, historic approach to jewelry is our starting point. And we transform that spirit into pieces that can be worn anywhere in the world, to epitomize the grace and glamor of Indian jewels.

Our fine jewelry is quietly opulent and deeply meaningful, created through a modern lens informed by old forgotten techniques. We are inspired by the richness and lineage of Indian jewelry, and its art of jewelry-making. From our statement necklaces to the most discreet rings, each Aurus design comes infused with meaning and intentional creativity.

“When I design a product, it’s like building a jigsaw puzzle,” says Puja. “I have always subconsciously designed for myself. I like a little irregularity, a break in symmetry, un-matching, a mix of innovation and old forgotten techniques as it is a reverence for the craft and a love of breathing new life into old-school karigari. This is who I am, which reflects in what I do.”

The art of craft

At Aurus, we see ourselves as the custodians of time-honored Indian jewelry-making traditions that must stand the test of time. Working with artisans who are keepers of their skills, we pick every step of the process—from the stringing to surface ornamentation, and stone setting—with deep thought and consideration. From exploring various gold techniques such as filigree and granulation, to experimenting with methods of pirai (stringing) and surface ornamentation like enameling, each design brings together diverse crafts in a nuanced manner.

The result is jewelry that balances the contrast between the past, present, and future. Meticulously crafted in traditional ways, and presented to the world in a digitally-forward visual language that has become iconic and celebrated.
